Best Starter Toons in Somni's Engine

Spend the Beta 500 on Loaffle or Magni. Do not blow it on a 1000-Prism kit you cannot steer.

Best Starter Toons

Your first Recruit is a tutorial. Somni’s Engine will let you window-shop Toasten, Peanut, Nara, Carie, and Shermie on day one. That is a trap. This page is the buy order after you redeem Beta for 500 Prisms. The Toons Hub is the index. The kit sheet sits on the roster. Rankings for items sit on the tier list hub.

The Beta gift equals exactly one of the two 500-Prism Recruits: Loaffle or Magni. It does not equal Luckee (777), Toasten (1000), or Peanut (1000). Walking out with 500 Prisms unspent is better than a 1000-Prism purchase you cannot play.

What a starter must do

  1. Finish machines without a gimmick. Quota is the game: Extract, Repair, Scavenge, Valves.
  2. Forgive a sprint mistake. You will mash shift. The kit should not double-punish.
  3. Have an active you remember under Something Noticed You.
  4. Stay readable. Random wheels and box forms are later skills.

Loaffle passes all four. Magni passes them if you already like machines. Peanut fails (2) and (4). Luckee fails (1) and (4).

Loaffle first

Loaffle “The Homeward” — start here. All stats 3. Loafy Aroma heals 15 HP on you and up to three nearest toons, 15s cooldown, three charges. Rising Yeast refunds 15 HP when a new zone loads. Veterans call Loaffle the best beginner because the kit is a forgiving healer: you can miss a hide, eat a Blob clip, and still put the squad back on a pump.

Bread-cat, sister of Toasten, Mira-sponsored. The official thumbnail puts Loaffle next to Magni. That is the starter pair, not a lore footnote.

Play Loaffle like a support, not a tourist. Walk more than you run. Hold a charge for the player who just got noticed. If you dump all three Aromas on full HP in Zone 1, you bought a healer and played a mascot. Full playbook: how to play Loaffle.

Magni if you can machine-rush

Magni “The Industrious” — take this instead of Loaffle if you already crush machines. All stats 3, same 500 cost. Magnetized adds +2 work levels for 10s (20s cooldown). Wrangling gives everyone +1 work for 30s on a new zone. That is a Repair-pump kit with a melee read. Ferro Thorn reflect perks belong here, not on Peanut.

Magni is better than Loaffle if skilled. The skill is not aim. The skill is staying on Extract and Repair instead of loot-touring, then winning a close fight when a Manic steps in. If your last three deaths were noise, buy Loaffle. If your last three deaths were 7/8 machines, buy Magni. Full playbook: how to play Magni.

Skip Peanut until you can hide

Peanut costs 1000 Prisms and starts at HP 2, Stamina 2, Strength 1. Boxed In is a box, not a gun. Trembling Grip is -2 Accuracy. Even a Blob (50 HP chaser) can kill you. Veterans: learn hide or you are dead weight.

Do not spend Beta leftovers toward Peanut because the model looks quiet. Quiet is a player skill. Buy Peanut after how to hide is boring, then open how to play Peanut. Until then, Loaffle’s 3 HP and a real heal will teach the Isle of Dreams without making you a 50-player liability.

Skip Luckee until you accept RNG

Luckee costs 777. Beta is 500. You cannot buy Luckee with the code alone. That math should end the discussion, but players still farm Prisms straight into a wheel.

Spin to win is a random item by color, 10s cooldown. Reroll! adds +5 Luck and then raises and lowers a random stat on every new zone (WalkSpeed locked). You can enter a floor with worse Repair than you left. If that sentence stresses you, Luckee is not a starter. Read how to play Luckee only after Loaffle or Magni can clear a quota.

Toasten as the first fight alt

Toasten is 1000 Prisms. HP 4, Strength 4, Stealth 2, Scavenge 4. Shocking Plug! is 30 damage and a 3s slow, 30s cooldown. Bravery is 30% speed for 20s on a new zone. This is the first honest fight alt: toaster-dog, Loaffle’s sibling, combat-leaning.

Unlock Toasten when you are hunting the wandering engine or when hide quotas feel free. Do not unlock Toasten because you are bored of healing. Boredom is not a fight column. Put the pistol away until how to survive is automatic. Full playbook: how to play Toasten.

Nara, Carie, and Shermie later

  • Nara (2000) — MiniCam for three minutes, Sight 6, Extract 5, Panic Flash on big hits. Observer, not a first hour.
  • Carie (3000) — Mother’s Embrace hugs for stealth, resist, and 40 HP heals, but Run 1. You will not outrun a Blob.
  • Shermie (4300 + Purple Hearted) — Fire!, Tank Anatomy, ram while running. Badge-gated. If you do not own Purple Hearted, this row is wallpaper. After the badge: how to play Shermie.

None of these three belong on a Beta receipt. Save, farm, then climb the shop. Getting Started still applies while you save.

How to spend the 500

  1. Redeem Beta in the lobby.
  2. Buy Loaffle or Magni. One. Not a 1000-Prism toon. Not Luckee.
  3. Keep Scrap for zone shops and ZP for intermission perks. Those wallets do not unlock Recruits.
  4. Play a week on that kit. Then farm Prisms for Toasten or a specialist.

Starter mistakes: main Peanut because stealth numbers look high; copy a 50-player Shermie you cannot buy; unlock two toons and master none; listen to a Discord Somni Foundation did not create (official links).

A first week on one kit

Day 1: Loaffle (or Magni), hide hotbar, controls.
Day 2: same Recruit, drill noise freezes.
Day 3: add one machine perk from the perks list if quotas feel free.
Day 4+: consider Toasten as an alt, or read the Peanut guide without buying yet.

Bring that boring kit to the run checklist so your friends do not show up as four unboxed Peanuts. Diversity is good. Four beginners who cannot hide is not diversity; it is a wipe. Check the updates hub if a patch retunes shop prices — until then, 500 buys a healer or a wrench, and that is the whole starter meta.
